Life of Significance Part 7

My first heroes would have to be my grandparents. Even after all these years, both my paternal and maternal grandparents loom larger than life in my heart and I am pretty sure they have earned gigantic mansions in heaven. (Can you feel the smile on my face right now?)

Beyond my grandparents, there were two women in ministry that I admired in my adult life: Dr. Irene Harvey (Atlanta) and Dr. Juanita Smith (California). I had the blessed opportunity to develop a relationship with Dr. Harvey and to even thank her for the impact she had on my life. Dr. Harvey modeled for me what it meant to walk in ministry without losing my “womanhood”. I never got to spend personal time with Dr. Smith, although I did have the opportunity to sit under her teaching during a conference. And when I say sit under her ministry, I do mean literally “sit under” as I happily sat on the floor in the front of an overcrowded hotel meeting room while drops of her sweat fell on me. That one session in her presence was life-changing and impacted me forever.

Along with my grandparents, Dr. Harvey and Dr. Smith have gone on to be with the Lord. They are all greatly missed and have never been replaced. There are many people who I admire and glean from, but these are the ones who will forever be my heroes.

Question: Have you had heroes in your life? Have they changed over time or been replaced as you have grown older?

Live in the overflow!

I had two heroes (sheroes) in my life growing up. Both of my grandmothers (paternal and maternal) as well. Growing up they both always talked to me about God anytime I went to South Ga to visit them for the summer. And when I was back in Atlanta I would always call them on Sunday afternoon/early evening. However, if I didn’t go to church I wouldn’t call because my dad’s mom and would always ask me “what the preacher preach about”. LOL!!!! I can still hear her saying that to me still to this day. I think that’s why I still take notes and go over them during the week. I was devastated when they passed away but I know that I will see them again. Rest in Heaven Grandma Emma and Big Mama Leila. They have not been replaced.

I don’t know about hero, except that would have been both my parents and my grandparents from my mother’s side of the family. I was not graced with the opportunity to have ever known my maternal grandparents from my father’s side. They modeled modesty, strength, and godliness for all of their children and grandchildren! I recall a former pastor of mine when I resided in North Carolina.. Apostle Tommy Ford. He was a young pastor with an “old” spirit! Under his teaching and ministry I learned what it truly means to live holy and to have a personal relationship with The Lord Jesus Christ. It was a new journey for me, but the hunger and thirst that I had for God became so much bigger than the plans that I had for my own life. As I recall some of the particular teachings under his tutelage, he was well beyond the times of the 90s and early 2000s. My walk with God was awakened back then, and I have truly been blessed by God to continue under great leadership within the church!
